English

What is AP English?

AP English courses are college-level programs designed by the College Board, tailored for 6–12 grade students to build advanced academic reading, writing, and analytical skills. These courses follow U.S. high school curriculum standards, adapted for AIA’s global student community, and carry weighted GPA credits (up to 5.0) that count toward high school graduation and college admission.

Students typically begin in Grade 10 or 11, starting with foundational high school English courses before progressing to AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, and specialized electives like Creative Writing and Business English. Courses are structured as rigorous introductions to college-level literary analysis, rhetorical criticism, and academic writing, preparing students for success in humanities, communications, and pre-law majors.

PROGRESSION

AP English courses progress to undergraduate English, creative writing, communications, and pre-law programs at U.S. and global universities. Qualifying AP exam scores (3+ on a 5-point scale) grant direct college credit, advanced placement, and exemption from introductory college English courses.

ENROLLMENT OPTIONS

AP English courses can be taken as full-time or part-time options alongside other AIA subjects. Students may combine foundational high school English with AP-level courses, and enroll in multiple AP English courses across Grades 10–12 to build a competitive college application.

EXAM

AP English Language and Composition: 3 hours 15 minutes total. Section 1: 60-minute multiple-choice (45 questions, 45% of score). Section 2: 2-hour 15-minute free-response (3 essays, 55% of score), externally assessed annually in May.

AP English Literature and Composition: 3 hours total. Section 1: 60-minute multiple-choice (55 questions, 45% of score). Section 2: 2-hour free-response (3 essays, 55% of score), externally assessed annually in May.

BASIS OF WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN ENGLISH

The course gives you the opportunity to build advanced communication skills within the context of your general high school education. You will study English 9-12, AP English language and composition, AP English literature and composition, business English, creative writing, structure of writing, and HS ESL. Students will learn about unifying themes in literature, rhetoric, and academic writing, and apply them to college-level coursework. They will acquire knowledge and understanding of literary analysis, rhetorical criticism, academic writing, and communication skills, with weighted AP credits to boost GPA for college admission.
